The palms we deal with around Darwin

Golden cane palms
The most planted screening palm in Darwin, and the most common call we get. Golden canes grow in clumps, so a golden cane palm removal means taking out every stem and the root mass together. Left alone they crowd fences, block drains and outgrow the spot they were planted in.
Coconut palms
Beautiful until a nut lands on the car. Coconut removal is as much a liability job as a tidy up, especially over driveways, pools and footpaths. We take the nuts and the flower spikes down, or drop the whole palm if it has grown too close to the house.
Cabbage palms
Native to the Top End and often growing on rural blocks rather than planted. Tough trunks and a heavy crown. Because they are a local native, some blocks need council approval before one comes out. We check that before we quote.
Foxtail palms
Self cleaning in theory, messy in practice. Foxtails drop fronds and big orange fruit, and they seed themselves all over the yard. Usually a cleaning job rather than a removal, unless it has come up somewhere it should not have.
Alexander palms
Tall, skinny and fast. They carry heavy seed pods high up, which is a problem when they are planted along a driveway. Height makes these a rope or lift job rather than something you handle off a ladder.

Frond and seed pod removal
Most palms never need to come out.
They need the dead weight off them once or twice a year, and that is the whole job.
Dead frond removal
Brown fronds hang on for months and turn into a skirt down the trunk. That skirt holds moisture, houses rats and green ants, and tears off in the first real wind. Palm frond removal in Darwin is best done in the dry, before the wet turns them into projectiles.
Seed pods and coconuts
Heavy seed pods and coconuts are the actual hazard. A nut off a mature coconut palm carries enough weight to dent a bonnet or crack a tile. We take pods, nuts and flower spikes down before they drop on their own.
How often
Once a year suits most palms. Coconuts and Alexanders over a driveway or a pool are better done twice, once mid dry and again before the build up. Foxtails shed on their own, so they mostly need the ground cleaned up rather than the palm.

Strip the crown
Fronds, seed pods and nuts come off first, lowered on ropes where anything sits under the palm.

Take the trunk
Straight fell where there is room, or cut down in sections. Palm trunks are heavy and wet, so nothing gets dropped near a roof.

Fronds chipped or bundled, trunk loaded out, site raked. We walk the block with you before we go.

A palm is not a tree, and it does not heal like one
This is the bit most people are never told, and it is why so many Darwin palms end up half dead after a tidy up.
A palm grows from one single point at the top. Damage that and there is no second chance.
What we do
- Take only dead, brown and hanging fronds
- Cut back to the trunk without cutting into it
- Leave the green crown alone so the palm keeps feeding itself
- Use rope access or a lift to reach the crown
- Remove seed pods and nuts before they fall
- Clean in the dry, so wounds are not sitting wet
What ruins a palm
- Climbing spikes, which punch permanent holes in the trunk
- Hurricane cutting, stripping it back to a few upright fronds
- Taking green fronds because they look untidy
- Cutting into the crown or the growing point
- Topping the palm, which simply kills it
- Ripping fronds off instead of cutting them
A tree seals over a wound. A palm cannot. Every spike hole stays in that trunk for the life of the palm, and it is an open door for rot and pests. If a quote sounds cheap because someone is going up on spikes, that is why.

Trunks loaded out
Palm trunks are wet and heavy, and they do not chip like timber. They get cut into sections and taken away with us.
Nothing left behind
Pods, nuts and loose frond bases all go. We recycle the green waste rather than sending it to landfill.
Worth knowing. Palm mulch breaks down slowly and mats together, so we do not usually leave it behind. If you want mulch for the garden, ask us on a tree job instead.
